Just a thought

I'm in the beginning of a book, "Mayflower." It is non-fiction based on the Mayflower journey to New England. I just came across a description of memory holes. If I understand it correctly, the Indians travelled a lot on foot, and they would dig holes along the way. One thing it did was to break the monotony of the trip, but something associated with the hole was suppose to be a story. Also, by the time the Pilgrims came over many Indians had perished from the plague, and the memory holes were basically artifacts of entire villages that didn't exist anymore.

Anyway, I thought a poem in it's purest form must be a memory hole. It must mean something to those that give it, and those that receive it, a story to help the reader continue on his way.
