Book Review - Mayflower
Mayflower; A Story of Courage, Community, and War by Nathaniel Philbrick is well written, and I trust the research. It offers points of view mostly from what is available in written form from that time (English), but the author is empathic with the Indians, too. I'd give it a 3.5/5 stars. It reads like a research paper, fact after supposed fact, but somehow, and maybe this is just par for the course with war stories, it doesn't really read like a story. I recommend it though, as I obtained knowledge, that I trust, that I didn't have before. Also, it shows that there were the good guys, and the bad guys on both sides. Mostly, it shows what people will do for land. No matter how religious a people are, they need land to pray, and no matter how much a people wander throughout the year, they need land to walk on. Different to what I thought I read about other tribes, or maybe just a quote from Chief Joseph of the Nez Pierce, these Indians did think land could be bought and sold. The Indians definitely sold land, and what they received may have been pittance by the English standards, but they may have thought it a fair price by their standards. According to this book, if an Indian loses his family then he has lost everything, but an English has more to lose since so much is put on possessions.
