I saw Dreamgirls on Broadway over 20 years ago. It was a matinee showing so Jennifer Holiday was not one of the actresses. The stand in was just awful, she sounded like she was croaking during I'm Telling You I'm Not Going.
The movie flowed really well. I'm not the biggest fan of the songs, but it didn't get stuck, and the acting was really good. Jennifer Hudson can definitely belt it out, and the other singers were really good, too. I think it's a good movie to go with someone because it's worth talking about; many social/cultural themes of the 60s and 70s could be explored - OHMYGAWD it ended in the Disco era, and it was still good :). I just wish the songs were more interesting, they are catchy for Broadway I guess, but with the plot of the movie they could have had more layers. Of course the songs had to tie in with the plot. I would give it a 3.5 out of 5 stars.
